Research Experiences for Community College Students (RECCS) is a summer research internship program for Colorado Community College students in the earth and environmental sciences. Each RECCS student works for 9 weeks with a mentor (or mentors) to conduct an authentic research project, which they present as a poster and talk at the end of the summer. RECCS supports the students through professional development activities, writing and communication training, and an inclusive cohort. We are committed to providing a supportive, empowering environment for our diverse students that helps them build confidence and thrive in their scientific endeavors.

We are recruiting a CU graduate student to be part of the RECCS support staff. Your role will involve planning and running social events to build community in a virtual environment (potentially with limited opportunities for in person activities), assisting with the organization of a virtual poster symposium, checking in with students, and providing writing feedback that helps the students create effective scientific posters and presentations. Our ideal RECCS teammate will be friendly, supportive, and committed to supporting students from a wide range of backgrounds, as well as a strong communicator. Personal experience in REU programs or in navigating academia as a first generation, non-traditional, minoritized or community college student would be an advantage. A background in the environmental or earth sciences is also preferred.

Through your participation in the program you will gain experience supporting a mentoring program, learning about best practices in science communication, interacting with and providing feedback for a cohort of REU students, and gaining interesting experiences around research practices.

RECCS will run from June 1 – July 30th 2021, in hybrid form, though the position will run from May 10 – July 30. While some students will be based at CU, others will be working fully remotely, thus group activities will be online and the position could be fully virtual. The position will pay $25/hr, for approximately 10 hours per week throughout the summer period (note some weeks may be more hours, some may be less).

If you are interested, please email reccs@colorado.edu with your resume or CV and a short cover letter explaining why you would like to be a part of RECCS.
