This past week, I had a wonderful opportunity to attend a workshop that gave an introduction to the technique of lifecycle assessment (LCA).
The workshop, given by AAAS fellow Dr. Anne Riederer, applied the concept of LCA to evaluating the environmental impacts of different stove and fuel options that could be used in gers. This is a key issue in UB, since ger district stoves are responsible for a significant portion of particulate matter (PM) emissions in UB (see this paper for more details). If we want to reduce emissions by using better stoves, it is important to be able to quantify what “better” means so that objective choices can be made. And that’s how LCA can help!
During the workshop, Mr. Batsaikhan of the UB Air Quality Agency gave an incredibly informative talk on the government’s plans to introduce new, cleaner-burning stoves into the ger district, starting this winter.
