As election season gets underway, you may be participating in political activities. A full detail of your rights and responsibilities during elections as a CU employee can be found here.
Here are a few highlights of the guidance:
Employees have the right as private citizens to participate in campaign-related activities on personal time. Unlike our NOAA federal colleagues, you are not limited in your political activities outside of work.
When participating in political activities, make sure you are clear that your political positions are your own, and not belonging to CU Boulder, or CIRES or any position related to NOAA/CIESRDS.
Private political activities must be conducted on personal time and without using university or federal resources (computers, copiers, emails, telephones).
Contributing to campaigns is allowable as long as you do so on personal time.
Wearing political attire, buttons and bumper stickers on your own private property (car, cell phone case, t-shirt) is allowed as long as your position is not public facing. No flyers should be posted on federal or university property and no distribution of political materials is allowed on work sites or on work time.
Election Day is Tuesday, November 5, 2024!
Employees and supervisors are encouraged to find flexibility in scheduling or flexing time to allow for registration and or
related activities.
- The CU Boulder Department of Human Resources strongly encourages managers and supervisors to provide flexibility in scheduling and granting leave for employees who may need to vote on Election Day on Tuesday, November 5.
- Most polling stations are open from 7 am to 7 pm, and employees are encouraged to vote before or after scheduled work hours when possible or participate via mail-in ballot. If that is not possible and employees have not chosen to vote by mail-in ballot or voted early, we recommend that they talk to their supervisor before Election Day to understand how to schedule time to vote.
