Make a Plan: HR Guidance for the Upcoming Election

Make a plan to vote!

For those that plan to vote, we want to be sure they can! The Department of Human Resources recommends supervisors allow scheduling flexibility to employees who wish to vote on Election Day on Nov. 3.

Most polling stations are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day, so employees should be able to vote outside of work hours. If that is not possible and employees have not chosen to vote by mail-in ballot or voted early, we recommend they talk to their supervisor before Election Day to understand how to schedule time to vote. Information to help support voting, including ballot drop-off boxes on campus may be found on the Election 2020 webpage

Supervisors may authorize paid administrative leave for eligible employees for community volunteer activities, which would include volunteering at the polls or other election support. Please refer to the Administrative Policy Statement on Leave or contact Employee Relations to understand volunteer time.

Paid administrative leave is not an entitlement or benefit and rests within the sole discretion of the supervisors.

As a reminder, the State Board Rules assert classified employees must be granted up to two hours of administrative leave when they do not have three hours of unscheduled work time during voting hours. These three hours do not have to be consecutive (e.g. employees who work from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. are not automatically eligible for this leave because they may vote between 7-8 a.m. or 5-7 p.m.).
