Overall the entire introductory week was very informative and insightful. It helped me mentally prepare for the expectations of the internship and get to know my fellow interns, mentors, and program directors. The science communication workshop, science process training with Jenny Briggs, , project discussion, sample talk from Hannah, and field note taking with Amy contextualized how I would like to approach my research over the 9 week period. The Mountain Research Station experience was novel. It was very inspiring to be staying with a community of dedicated research scientists and who work and live up there. The MRS is located in the Front Range of the southern Rocky Mountains in Boulder County, Colorado, 40 km (26 miles) from the main campus. Hearing from different experts in the field about the environmental science of mountain systems , alpine environmental science, plant and animal ecology, biogeochemistry, hydrology, geomorphology, and atmospheric science provided me with a wide range of knowledge to contextualize the research I will be doing this summer. I learned more in one week from this direct field experience than I have with many of my natural science courses over the course of 15 weeks. In addition, I have increased confidence and motivation being able to connect, collaborate, and rely on other RECCS interns for support and exchange of ideas throughout my research experience.  This connection we built with each other was largely facilitated by this unique experience. It is inspiring to be in a team setting with like minded aspiring and science oriented individuals. During the down time at MRS, I was able to play card games, go hiking, and have in depth discussions with my cohort regarding our passions, interests, and goals.

  • The first week was sort of like drinking out a fire hose, but it looks like you really got a lot out of hearing about so many facets of science. Now it’s time to get in-depth with you work – you will be the expert at the end of you project!
