Credit: Aman Chokshi\/University of Melbourne<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>By Patrick Cullis, CIRES and NOAA scientist<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After six straight months of darkness, the Sun has finally returned to the sky above the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station.&nbsp;NOAA scientists working at the station and collecting air samples at the Atmospheric Research Observatory (ARO) experience only one sunrise and one sunset per year due to the unique location of the South Pole on Earth\u2019s axis.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"South Pole Sunrise - Aman Chokshi\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BRrmcJaUPLA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>Sunrise timelapse at the South Pole.
