After winding past the lake of beautiful Nederland and bouncing across a few stretches of\u00a0dirt road, we approached CU Boulder’s Mountain Research Station. We were greeted by a vintage snow cat, a collection of dorms and small mountain offices, and, of course, a band of hikers with all kinds of odd machinery and science tools strapped to their backs. They looked soaked from the waist down and left a trail of water and mud in their wake – they were doing some serious research. \u00a0For the next few days we had guest speakers guide us through the area and described the local flora and fauna of this Riparian zone, and we learned to take field notes of them appropriately.<\/p>\n
These guest speakers were very knowledgeable, and we eventually found ourselves reading scientific journals that they had published.<\/p>\n
