After Skyping several times and countless emails, yesterday (Saturday) was the first time I met my Ph.D. student mentor, Kelly, in person! We spent most of the day on the road to RMBL. Once in Crested Butte, we decided to do some reconnaissance on a river crossing that we will have to make this week. After hiking around and gathering information from some kayakers, we found a crossing about 3 miles upstream from our site. We will make that journey later in the week when the weather looks a bit more promising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today (Sunday) I finally got my first taste of field work! We checked some plots for germination and I learned some key identifying traits of the different species of the genus with which I am working. I was also able to practice taking field notes. Upon our return from the field site, we began working on methods, protocols, and materials for collecting and testing pollen viability. I feel like I am constantly learning interesting and useful things with Kelly. She is providing me with amazing feedback and guidance.
