The Daily Caller<\/em><\/a> News anchor Dan Rather said global warming is \u201ccausing real damage and death\u201d in a tweet excoriating the media for supposedly ignoring \u201cone of the most important stories of our time.\u201d<\/p>\n But is it really true that global warming \u201crarely tops the headlines\u201d? Not really.<\/p>\n Liberal journalists\u00a0routinely complain<\/a>\u00a0that global warming coverage has been \u201csiloed\u201d or marginalized. More recently, The New Republic\u2019s Emily Atkin\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0news outlets needed to connect every extreme weather event \u2014 in that case wildfires \u2014 global warming.<\/p>\n NRP and MSNBC anchor Chris Hayes were forced to defend their supposed lack of global warming coverage. Hayes said global warming segments had been a \u201cpalpable ratings killer\u201d as a reason he didn\u2019t do them very often. However, just because large networks didn\u2019t focus much on global warming, since they\u2019re driven by ratings, that doesn\u2019t mean mountains of climate coverage isn\u2019t generated every year.<\/p>\n Northeastern University professor Matthew Nisbet\u00a0took issue<\/a>\u00a0with Atkin\u2019s claim of climate coverage being \u201csiloed.\u201d He pointed to data showing thousands of articles written by just five major U.S. newspapers.<\/p>\n Thousands of articles have been written on the topic, including 252 articles from The New York Times alone in July 2018, according to University of Colorado researchers. Nisbet cited these figures.<\/p>\n And those figures likely don\u2019t include the digital-only articles written at The Washington Post and other papers tracked by university researchers.
