{"id":1782,"date":"2015-09-21T16:36:09","date_gmt":"2015-09-21T16:36:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/prometheus\/?p=1782"},"modified":"2015-09-21T16:36:09","modified_gmt":"2015-09-21T16:36:09","slug":"150-shortlisted-for-ecs-science-advisory-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/prometheus\/2015\/09\/21\/150-shortlisted-for-ecs-science-advisory-group\/","title":{"rendered":"150 Shortlisted for EC\u2019s Science Advisory Group"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/prometheus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/36\/2015\/09\/ec2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1783\" src=\"http:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/prometheus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/36\/2015\/09\/ec2.jpg\" alt=\"ec2\" width=\"660\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/prometheus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/36\/2015\/09\/ec2.jpg 660w, https:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/prometheus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/36\/2015\/09\/ec2-300x136.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.universityworldnews.com\/article.php?story=20150919073241490#.Vf7RnctKj4c.mailto\" target=\"_blank\"><em>University World News<\/em><\/a><br \/>\nSeptember 19, 2015<\/p>\n<p>by Jan Petter Myklebust<\/p>\n<p>More than 150 names have been put forward for membership of the high level group of scientific advisors being created under a new system for providing independent scientific advice in European Commission, or EC, policy-making.<\/p>\n<p>Carlos Moedas, European Commissioner for research, science and innovation, said in a <a class=\"bluelink\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/2014-2019\/moedas\/announcements\/independent-scientific-advice-policy_en\" target=\"_new\">speech<\/a> at the European Parliament last Tuesday that consultation for nominations has just closed and the response has been \u201cextremely positive\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>An identification committee will now propose members by the end of October and the Commissioner expects the group to be up and running by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>The role of the group will be to ensure that the Commission has the best available scientific advice, wherever it comes from,\u201d he said. \u201cIt should guarantee the quality and independence of the advice provided. It should help identify topics where independent advice is needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his speech, Moedas stressed that independent scientific advice was needed to inform policy-makers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to be sure that decisions on the safety of new medicines, novel foods, new technologies and so on, are based on facts and not fiction. We want to ensure we take the right decisions in a crisis.
