\u041c\u043e\u043d\u0433\u043e\u043b X\u044d\u043b<\/a><\/p>\n I\u2019ve been wondering a lot about how science works in Mongolia. How does funding work? How is research divided between the universities and institutions? What is grad school like?\u00a0 What\u2019s the tenure track like? What are publication or presentation expectations for professors, researchers, and students? How do research groups function and departments function? I think I will spend my entire time here trying to develop those answers, and I certainly don\u2019t think I will be able to answer all of these questions in one blog post.<\/p>\n I think the best, most informative (and enjoyable) way to figure out the science system in Mongolia will be to talk with the individuals that compose the system. To share these conversations with you, I\u2019ve decided to start a series entitled, \u201cMeet Mongolia\u2019s Scientists.\u201d In each installment of the series, I will post an interview with a Mongolian scientist I have met while here. Admittedly, these interviews will be slanted toward Mongolian scientists involved in air pollution studies in Ulaanbaatar, since that is the type of scientist I tend to run into. But I will also try to interview folks from other fields too. The current plan is to post on interview (Update 9 Dec 2011: approximately<\/em> :o)) on the 2nd Friday My first interview is with Ms. Gerelmaa Gunchin, a Masters student at the National University of Mongolia<\/a>, with whom I am just beginning to work. She will help analyze our data once instruments are up and running. An interesting thing about Gerelmaa is that she has used her expertise in nuclear physics to better understand air pollution in UB.
