I frequently hear a lot of comments about how bad the air pollution is in the winter or how the dust is particularly bad in the spring but that the summer time air is pretty okay. The data below destroy this myth.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cires.colorado.edu\/blogs\/mongolia\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/plugins\/wordpress\/img\/trans.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take a look at the PM10 concentrations in the last 24 hours in the graph below. Remember, PM10 is just a name for the stuff floating around in the air that gives our lungs a hard time (more technically, PM10 is the particulate matter that is 10 microns or smaller &#8211; want a visual?\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/christahasenkopf.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Slide11.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Go here<\/a>). The box shown to the right of this graph reports the 24 hour average from that highlighted portion of the graph: an average of 0.085 mg\/m<sup>3<\/sup> (or 85 \u03bcg\/m<sup>3<\/sup>) for the two sites (all data is from the UB City Air Quality Department, and the latest air quality measurements can be found\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ub-air.info\/ub-air\/mn\/laq.html\">here<\/a>*). Note the graph is shown in units of mg\/m<sup>3<\/sup>, but most standards are reported in \u03bcg\/m<sup>3<\/sup>, so careful with units: 1 mg = 1000 \u03bcg.\u00a0 The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/mediacentre\/factsheets\/fs313\/en\/index.html\">World Health Organization 24 hour average recommended maximum concentration for PM10<\/a> is 50 \u03bcg\/m<sup>3<\/sup> (0r 0.05 mg\/m<sup>3<\/sup>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/mongolia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2011\/08\/Slide3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/mongolia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2011\/08\/Slide3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(I know I said we&#8217;re just focusing in on PM10, but I&#8217;d also like to point out that PM2.5<a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/mediacentre\/factsheets\/fs313\/en\/index.html\">WHO standards<\/a> are violated as well &#8211; WHO recommends 24 hour mean concentrations of PM2.5 to be below 25 \u03bcg\/m<sup>3<\/sup> or, equivalently,\u00a0 0.025 mg\/m<sup>3<\/sup>.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Okay,\u00a0 but just looking at the last 24 hours isn&#8217;t a statistically significant amount of time to determine the summertime air quality in UB.\u00a0<strong>So let&#8217;s look at average monthly measurements taken in UB over a year (Figure 2b, modified from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.springerlink.com\/content\/n264p83028pgx76p\/fulltext.pdf\">Allen et al., 2011<\/a>):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/mongolia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2011\/08\/Slide1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/mongolia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2011\/08\/Slide1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Air quality is better in the summer, but it is still unacceptably poor. This post doesn&#8217;t explore this, but the major sources of air pollution in the summer versus the winter differ as well. And PM2.5 levels (at least in the summer of 2009, see Figure 2c from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.springerlink.com\/content\/n264p83028pgx76p\/fulltext.pdf\">Allen et al., 2011<\/a>) are at &#8211; or at least hover around &#8211;\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/mediacentre\/factsheets\/fs313\/en\/index.html\">WHO standards<\/a>).\u00a0<strong>However, the point is, when we say the air pollution in UB is &#8220;good&#8221; in the summer, we need to realize just how relative a term that is.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Feel free to check out the other data on the UB Air Quality Department at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ub-air.info\/ub-air\/mn\/laq\/chart-48hr.html\">this site<\/a>* (PM2.5, \u00a0carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO<sub>2<\/sub>), nitrogen dioxide (NO<sub>2<\/sub>), and ozone (O<sub>3<\/sub>) levels).
