Lodoysamba is the feature person for the 4<sup>th<\/sup> installment of <a href=\"http:\/\/cires.colorado.edu\/blogs\/mongolia\/2011\/04\/13\/meet-mongolia\u2019s-scientists-\u2013-starting-friday\/\">Meet Mongolia\u2019s Scientists Series<\/a>.\u00a0 Lodoysamba, a retired Professor of Electronics at the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.num.edu.mn\/Default.aspx?alias=www.num.edu.mn\/eng\"> National University of Mongolia<\/a>, has led an interesting and varied career, working on problems in nuclear science, computer hardware, and air pollution. Most recently, he has been working on conducting studies on different types of <em>ger<\/em> stoves and fuel combinations to determine the most efficient combo, in terms of PM emissions. Various parameters, such as chimney temperature, PM10\/2.5 levels exiting the stove, and NOx and SOx are being measured. The goal is to find the most efficient, in terms of PM-production, combination of stove and fuel possible.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One of the most fascinating aspects of Lodoysamba\u2019s career track is how it has followed important aspects of Mongolia, including the Cold War Era, mining, and, currently, the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/mongolia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2011\/03\/UB_PM10_comparison.jpg\">off the charts<\/a><\/em> levels of air pollution in UB. After completing his master\u2019s degree in Physics in 1972, Lodoysamba was recruited as a computer hardware engineer to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jinr.ru\/\">Joint Institute for Nuclear Research<\/a> (JINR) in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dubna\">Dubna, Russia<\/a> (at this time, of course, it was the USSR). During the communist era, JINR recruited top talent from many of its member states, such as Mongolia, North Korea, Germany, Hungary, and China, to name a few. Lodoysamba near the Stove Testing Facility in Ulaanbaatar.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Based on his work in Dubna, Lodoysamba returned to Mongolia and set up the first Mongolian computer network, connecting a computer, mini-computer, and analyzer to conduct nuclear experiments at the Nuclear Research Center, a facility associated with the National University of Mongolia. He helped build many of the instruments still used there, including a neutron generator and microtron. He later went to Moscow State University, and obtained his PhD in Automation in 1986. Again, returning to Mongolia, Lodoysamba also applied nuclear techniques to the mining industry, developing and marketing a technique to measure the degree of fluoride enrichment in raw and processed calcium fluoride deposits in Mongolia.<\/p>\n<p>Lodoysamba became interested in air pollution issues in the 2004, as air quality in Ulaanbaatar worsened, due to a booming population with increased energy demands that was (and is still being) met by an antiquated power plant system and inefficient smoke-spewing <em>ger<\/em> stoves. At various stations around UB, he has managed PM2.5, PM10, and BC monitoring, as well as elemental analysis and subsequent source appointment of PM samples. \u00a0He and his air pollution team have collaborated with, among others, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iaea.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">International Atomic Energy Agency,<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/\">The World Bank<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adb.org\/\">The Asian Development Bank<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gns.cri.nz\/\">The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences at the National Isotope Centre in New
