Recently, my husband and I were fortunate to be asked to tag along with\u00a0Prof. Tsolmon<\/a>‘s group at the National University of Mongolia and a Japanese group from\u00a0NAJO<\/a> to conduct\u00a0“You are Galileo”<\/a> workshops and hold star parties at two different schools in the Gobi.<\/p>\n

The "You Are Galileo" Gobi outreach group. It consisted of 5 Japanese, 1 Mongolian professor, 7 Mongolian university students, and us 2 Americans.<\/p><\/div>\n

The program brings telescope kits to school teachers and children, and, after a brief general astronomy talk, the teachers and children assemble the kits (teachers get a 40x scope, while students get a simpler to build 10x scope). In the evenings, we had star parties to try out the newly constructed telescopes.<\/p>\n

For this trip, we went to two schools in the Gobi – one in the Dundgov aimag<\/a> capital city Mandalgov and one in Omnogov aimag capital city Dalanzadgad. In Mandalgovi, I met several secondary level teachers interested in atmospheric science lessons, and I am hoping these initial meetings will blossom into further collaborations.<\/p>\n

The experience was fantastic, in terms of the outreach work (which, we helped out where we could as extra hands, but we were in no way in charge or organizing and largely observed), the interactions with the university students who participated in the project, and the travel between places.<\/p>\n
