(Oh My!) | \u041c\u042d\u0422\u0426 #3: \u0417\u0430\u0439\u043d\u0430\u0430\u0441 \u0442\u0430\u043d\u0434\u0430\u043d \u0441\u0443\u0434\u043b\u0430\u043b, \u0423\u0440\u0442\u044b\u043d \u0434\u0443\u0443 \u0431\u0430\u0441 \u0422\u0435\u043b\u0435\u0441\u043a\u043e\u043f"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cires.colorado.edu\/blogs\/mongolia\/2011\/06\/10\/mmss-3-remote-sensing-throat-singing-and-telescopes\/#1\">\u041c\u043e\u043d\u0433\u043e\u043b X\u044d\u043b<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rather than do an entry this time on one Mongolian scientist, I thought it would be interesting to talk about a scientific conference I attended recently in Ulaanbaatar.<\/p>\n<p>Last week was the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/ssmongolia.yolasite.com\/\">5<\/a><sup><a href=\"http:\/\/ssmongolia.yolasite.com\/\">th<\/a><\/sup><a href=\"http:\/\/ssmongolia.yolasite.com\/\"> Annual Workshop on Remote Sensing and Space Science in Mongolia<\/a>&#8221; held by the National University of Mongolia and organized by Prof. Tsolmon Renchin (feature person in <a href=\"http:\/\/cires.colorado.edu\/blogs\/mongolia\/2011\/05\/13\/mmss-post-2-astronomy-remote-sensing-scientist-prof-tsolmon\/\">MMSS #2<\/a>). The workshop was two days. The first day focused on remote sensing studies done on Mongolia and student presentations, while the second day focused on astronomy and a telescope-making workshop for secondary education teachers. Since Prof. Tsolmon knew my graduate research was in planetary science, she invited me to give a talk, which is how I became involved [as promised to the audience, the powerpoint of the talk is <a href=\"\/ubairpollution.org\/Presentations\/WS_June2011.pptx\">here<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The kick off to the conference was very unique. Twenty or so students in Prof. Tsolmon\u2019s group sung the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sH0Z45xZvqg&amp;feature=related\">national anthem of Mongolia<\/a>. \u00a0And they sounded good. \u00a0I mean, really good. I just wouldn\u2019t have assumed that a group of young scientists would also have nice voices, too! I kept imagining my old research group up there instead of Tsolmon&#8217;s, performing a song. It was not conceivable (sorry guys!). Then, one student played the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Mongolian_Musician.jpg\">Morin khuur<\/a> (horse head violin), a\u00a0traditional two-stringed Mongolian instrument. At a reception that evening, another student sang a beautiful song in a <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pavelfilatov.com\/gall\/Mongolia_People\/mini\/29365.jpg\">del<\/a><\/em> (check out a video taken of the event <a href=\"http:\/\/joeflasher.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/IMG_0384\/IMG_0384.mov\">here<\/a>), while yet two others performed a song by throat singing (check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DY1pcEtHI_w&amp;feature=related\">this youtube video,<\/a> as an example- you have to wait until about 17 seconds in to hear the particularly amazing part). It fascinated me to no end that <em>several <\/em>students from Prof. Tsolmon\u2019s group were talented enough at other things to actually perform \u2013 and perform well \u2013 for an audience. And I don\u2019t get the impression that this was a rare or unique occurrence, whereas in a scientific group in the U.S., I think this surely is (as evidenced by the novelty of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Fl4L4M8m4d0\">this U.S. biology research group\u2019s recent performance gone-viral<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Two of the highlights of the conference for me were the student presentations and the telescope-making workshop for teachers. The student presentations were conducted in a mix of English and Mongolian by undergraduate and graduate students. The<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nao.ac.jp\/E\/\"> National Astronomical Observatory of Japan<\/a>, through the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www-irc.mtk.nao.ac.jp\/~webadm\/Galileo-E\/index.php\">You are Galileo Program<\/a>,&#8221;\u00a0provided 400 40-mm telescope kits, to be distributed to secondary schools all over Mongolia.\u00a0 The idea was that the Ulaanbaatar (and a few countryside) teachers who were in attendance would assemble the telescopes, and then take them back to their classroom to use. The design of the telescopes was slick! I was so impressed with the simplicity of both the construction and the parts themselves. Most of the assembly was done using cardboard tubes, scotch tape, glue, scissors, and paper. The only pieces that were of special construction were the lens, eye piece, and tripod attachment.<\/p>\n<p>While working on them, everyone in the room was quiet and deeply concentrating. It reminded me of how effective hands on activities are \u2013 at any age \u2013 for focusing a group\u2019s attention on one subject. And of the satisfaction that comes from creating something yourself. Each teacher got a certificate at the end for completing the workshope and telescope. Note the CU Buff sticker on the body. <\/p><\/div>\n<p>Prof. Tsolmon, students, and Japanese scientists that sponsored the telescope workshop are now traveling all around Mongolia, conducting similar teacher workshops and also hosting stargazing parties at which to use their newly constructed telescopes.
