Tsolmon is a space science and remote sensing professor at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.num.edu.mn\/Default.aspx?alias=www.num.edu.mn\/eng\">National University of Mongolia<\/a>. She currently teaches remote sensing, astronomy, and environmental science courses and supervises over twenty masters and doctoral students.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_114\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/mongolia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2011\/05\/Untitled-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-114\" class=\"size-large wp-image-114 \" src=\"http:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/mongolia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2011\/05\/Untitled-2-935x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"490\" height=\"536\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/mongolia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2011\/05\/Untitled-2-935x1024.jpg 935w, https:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/mongolia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2011\/05\/Untitled-2-274x300.jpg 274w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 490px) 100vw, 490px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-114\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prof. Tsolmon, advising a graduate student in the NUM-ITC-UNESCO Remote Sensing and Space Science Laboratory.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Although Tsolmon currently lives in Ulaanbaatar, she has travelled Mongolia and the world over in pursuit of her education. As a child, Tsolmon\u2019s father was a journalist, which meant they moved all over the country. Despite the different locations, Tsolmon remembers the common sight of a pitch-black sky and a bright Milky Way.\u00a0 For her bachelor&#8217;s degree, Tsolmon ventured to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.4icu.org\/reviews\/11769.htm\">Irkutsk State Pedagogical University<\/a> in Russia to study applied mathematics. Upon graduation, she returned to Ulaanbaatar and the National University of Mongolia to earn her master\u2019s degree in Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems. Tsolmon went on to do her doctoral research at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chiba-u.ac.jp\/e\/\">Chiba University<\/a> in Japan in environmental science and remote sensing. To round out her educational experience, Tsolmon spent approximately 10 months in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iie.org\/en\/Programs\/Hubert-H-Humphrey-Fellowship-Program\">U.S. as a Humphrey-Fulbright fellow<\/a>. She divided her time between NASA\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/centers\/goddard\/home\/index.html\">Goddard Space Flight Center<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psu.edu\/\">Pennsylvania State University<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now as a professor at the National University of Mongolia, Tsolmon has been a leader in bringing to light the importance and utility of remote sensing to Mongolia. In 2003, she helped create the NUM-ITC-UNESCO Remote Sensing and Space Science Laboratory. As she points out, remote sensing is an ideal technique for studying topics such as snow coverage, pastureland use, and forest fires in a country like Mongolia that is so vast and contains many difficult to access areas. This program was <strong><em>the first<\/em><\/strong> educational \u2013 masters and doctoral degree granting \u2013 program for remote sensing in all of Mongolia. The laboratory also gives GIS and general remote sensing trainings to outside organizations, such as NGOs and mining businesses.<\/p>\n<p>In the past year, Tsolmon has helped create <strong><em>the first <\/em><\/strong>graduate degree program for astronomy in Mongolia at the National University. In order to spread the wonder and beauty of astronomy to areas outside Mongolia\u2019s main urban center, Tsolmon has helped host star parties for the public all around Mongolia (Interested in checking out the next one? In June, she\u2019ll be going to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dalanzadgad\">Dalanzadgad<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/\u00d6mn\u00f6govi_Province\">Umnugovi<\/a> aimag and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Khovd_Province\">Khovd<\/a> aimag).<\/p>\n<p>When I asked Tsolmon where she saw herself in the next ten years, she said she sees herself here in Ulaanbaatar, continuing to strengthen Mongolian science education.
