Three years of snow accumulation since the big 2012 melt season, have not added significant <a href=\"http:\/\/cires.colorado.edu\/news\/greenlands-sponge-affected-atmospheric-warming\" target=\"_blank\">buffering capacity to the firn<\/a> &#8211; basically there is one thin layer of snow to buffer the meltwater. \u00a0Once that layer is gone, it&#8217;s just bare ice, which indicates\u00a0that the impending\u00a02016 melt will very likely\u00a0surpass\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/nsidc.org\/greenland-today\/2013\/02\/greenland-melting-2012-in-review\/\">record breaking melt that occurred\u00a0in 2012<\/a>, which is very concerning.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_456\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/firncover\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2015\/06\/IMG_4122.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-456\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-456\" src=\"http:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/firncover\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2015\/06\/IMG_4122-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Ice core drill bit\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/firncover\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2015\/06\/IMG_4122-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/firncover\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2015\/06\/IMG_4122-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/firncover\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2015\/06\/IMG_4122-624x416.jpg 624w, https:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/firncover\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2015\/06\/IMG_4122.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-456\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ice core drill bit<\/p><\/div>\n<p>At temperatures hovering just around freezing, the team attempted to drill a couple of 16 m (52.5 ft) ice cores yesterday, but the drills warmed up enough to cause melting and one\u00a0got stuck in the ice below at ~3 m (~9.5 ft) &#8211; which they were eventually able to retrieve &#8211; and the other was much deeper, at ~8 m (~26 ft). \u00a0After trying all afternoon, the second barrel\u00a0still wouldn&#8217;t budge. They tried &#8220;fishing&#8221; it out with aircraft cable pulled by snowmobile, which ended up snapping the cable. \u00a0The plan for tomorrow is to go into full-on &#8220;Operation Drill\u00a0Rescue&#8221; pulling out all the stops!<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE: After\u00a0a phone-in from the field earlier this afternoon, it was reported that the team was successful in retrieving the buried drill core earlier this morning by pouring 30 gallons of boiling water down the hole to melt the surrounding snow and ice!
