{"id":287,"date":"2015-05-19T21:53:40","date_gmt":"2015-05-20T03:53:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/firncover\/?p=287"},"modified":"2015-05-19T22:10:28","modified_gmt":"2015-05-20T04:10:28","slug":"dye-2-traverse-proves-challenging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/firncover\/2015\/05\/19\/dye-2-traverse-proves-challenging\/","title":{"rendered":"DYE 2 Traverse Proves Challenging"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s snowmobile traverse to DYE 2 was rather\u00a0uneventful at the start, but about 35 km\/22 mi in, the team was faced with strong head winds and blowing snow which produced full on whiteout conditions with temperatures hovering around -30\u02daF. \u00a0With\u00a0no visibility of the\u00a0horizon line for the remaining 60 km\/37 mi, they exclusively depended\u00a0on their GPS waypoints for direction. \u00a0The color white was all that was perceptible\u00a0\u00a0in any direction. \u00a0<a title=\"Darren Hill\" href=\"http:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/firncover\/darren-hill\/\" target=\"_blank\">Darren Hill<\/a>, the team technician, stated &#8220;You couldn&#8217;t see anything in front of you except for the very back of the sled ahead. \u00a0It felt like we were going around in circles and we could barely see out of our helmets.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Eventually after about 6 hours of traversing, the team safely made it to DYE 2. \u00a0They discovered that during the traverse, one of the fuel barrels had punctured. \u00a0After locating the leak, they placed the barrel on its side and used a piece of chewing gum to plug the hole in an attempt to keep the snow out. \u00a0Ironically, virtually the identical\u00a0situation occurred on the <a href=\"http:\/\/act-13.blogspot.dk\/\" target=\"_blank\">ACT-13 field campaign<\/a> when a fuel barrel was punctured and &#8220;repaired&#8221; in the same manner.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_288\" style=\"width: 445px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/firncover\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2015\/05\/Photo-May-12-2-54-47-AM.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-288\" class=\"wp-image-288\" src=\"http:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/firncover\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2015\/05\/Photo-May-12-2-54-47-AM-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Punctured fuel barrel &quot;repaired&quot; with chewing gum.
