It’s a universal truth in polar science. \u00a0Since\u00a0the FirnCover\u00a0team has finished frantically preparing for the field,\u00a0we’re at the mercy of the weather, the flight schedules, and\u00a0the priority of other missions.\u00a0 All three have conspired this week and our team is\u00a0instructed to “stand down” another day. \u00a0It was originally due to\u00a0weather, but the morning dawned clear and crisp last night, now it’s Air National Guard mission priorities, which we’ve\u00a0just as much chance\u00a0of controlling as the weather. \u00a0Sigh. \u00a0Our cargo is packed and palleted, so there’s little to do but drink a coffee, get a bite to eat and wait it out patiently.<\/p>\n

But we have little room to complain, it could be worse. \u00a0Colleagues and friends of ours\u00a0are currently wrapping up a campaign in SE Greenland, studying the behavior of firn aquifers there<\/a>. \u00a0They have been hammered by snow and supply shortages, and have had to scrap many of their science goals.<\/p>\n

So minus the wait, our campaign preparations have been a complete success so far. \u00a0We’re ready to start working!!!<\/p>\n
