Dear CIRES colleagues, <\/p>\n\n\n\n


September 1, we will begin our new cooperative agreement with NOAA, and I remain delighted that we have the opportunity to continue our longstanding relationship with the agency. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of you have wondered about the conventions we plan to use in paper affiliations, professional bios, etc. I am providing guidance below, and we can discuss this further at tomorrow\u2019s Town Hall<\/a>. While this information is of practical value primarily for our NOAA-based people, I am sending this note to All-CIRES so everyone is aware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall Guidance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. CIRES remains CIRES, an institute of the University of Colorado Boulder, and we collaborate closely with NOAA. <\/li>
  2. The NOAA cooperative agreement that will soon be funding ~50% of our institutional research is NA22OAR4320151, for the Cooperative Institute for Earth System Research and Data Science (CIESRDS). <\/li>
  3. Most CIRES people embedded in NOAA teams are officially part of this new CIESRDS, and remain employees of CIRES. <\/li>
  4. The CIESRDS\/CIRES\/CU Boulder\/NOAA relationship will be confusing to many audiences. Please seek accurate ways to simplify, eg: 
    1. I am part of CIRES at CU Boulder. We partner with NOAA.<\/li>
    2. I work in a NOAA laboratory as a CU Boulder employee; I\u2019m part of an institute called the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences. <\/li><\/ol><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Paper Affiliations & Acknowledgements<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. As of September 1, 2022, most CIRES researchers at NOAA are funded under a new cooperative agreement (CA) and should acknowledge this in all papers. In some cases, you should also include support of the old CA, too, depending on when the research & paper submission took place:  
        1. Old CA: NA17OAR4320101 \u2013 Sept 1, 2017-Aug 31, 2023<\/li>
        2. New CA: NA22OAR4320151 \u2013 Sept 1, 2022-Aug 31, 2027<\/li>
        3. Sample acknowledgments: 
          1. This research was supported (in part \/ by \/ etc.) NOAA cooperative agreements NA17OAR4320101 and NA22OAR4320151. <\/li>
          2. This research was supported (in part \/ by \/ etc.) NOAA cooperative agreement NA22OAR4320151 <\/li><\/ol><\/li><\/ol><\/li>
          3. CIRES researchers should include their CIRES affiliation in all publications. NOAA laboratories and centers also appreciate affiliations, so please use both, eg: 
            1. 1=Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, CU Boulder; 2=NOAA Chemical Sciences Laboratory (or PSL, NCEI, etc.) <\/li><\/ol><\/li>
            2. Include your CIRES affiliation on other communications, too, including emails, presentations, conference abstracts, seminar announcements and quotes in news stories. Please do not represent yourself as a federal employee.<\/li>
            3. CIRES Visiting Fellows can acknowledge CA funding as shown below, depending on when the research took place (see 1ci and 1cii above for dates):
