{"id":333,"date":"2018-08-09T22:03:13","date_gmt":"2018-08-09T22:03:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/aircore\/?p=333"},"modified":"2018-08-10T17:40:37","modified_gmt":"2018-08-10T17:40:37","slug":"tie-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/aircore\/2018\/08\/09\/tie-game\/","title":{"rendered":"Tie Game!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monday, July 30, 2018<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Tim did the morning prep of the AirCores at the cabin, Jack and Sonja drove into Park Falls to check with the US Forest Service about launching at Newman Lake.\u00a0 They welcomed it but, anticipating questions, they sent word to let nearby residents know in advance.\u00a0 And so the the twelfth AirCore of the trip started its journey on a small swimming beach.\u00a0 A young girl catching frogs in the lake seemed a little hesitant to pull the ripcord on the launcher, so Ruth, an enthusiastic observer gladly took the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ojeL562xdB4\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The balloon followed the predicted trajectory\u2026 well, not really, but a little bit\u2026. kind of.\u00a0 With light winds, the trajectories seem to be less reliable, and we definitely had light winds throughout most of the profile.\u00a0 In the end, however, the AirCore somehow made its way over to within a handful of miles of the predicted landing site, and we got our first taste of northern Wisconsin AirCore recovery.\u00a0 We followed a series of dirt roads to what looked like our shortest approach to the AirCore, which was about 0.7 miles into the woods.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We sprayed ourselves with bug repellent and crashed our way through fairly dense trees, brush and mosquitoes (and a lot of raspberry bushes, too, so we grabbed some snacks along the way).\u00a0 And suddenly there was another dirt road and then the AirCore dangling in a tree another 30 feet into the woods.\u00a0<div id=\"attachment_337\" style=\"width: 311px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-337\" class=\" wp-image-337\" src=\"http:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/aircore\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/69\/2018\/08\/IMG_5359s-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"301\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/aircore\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/69\/2018\/08\/IMG_5359s-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/aircore\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/69\/2018\/08\/IMG_5359s-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/aircore\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/69\/2018\/08\/IMG_5359s-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 301px) 100vw, 301px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-337\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bouncing over a stretch of sphagnum moss&#8230;
