We cross-calibrate with known concentrations of HNO<sub>3<\/sub>, HONO and N<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>5<\/sub>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_177\" style=\"width: 264px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-177\" class=\"wp-image-177 \" src=\"http:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/air-quality-in-slc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/60\/2017\/01\/Carrie-stringing-line-225x300.jpg\" width=\"254\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/air-quality-in-slc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/60\/2017\/01\/Carrie-stringing-line-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/air-quality-in-slc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/60\/2017\/01\/Carrie-stringing-line-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 254px) 100vw, 254px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-177\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carrie strings a line of tubing to run a calibration source to the inlet on top of the plane<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For the technically and chemically inclined here are some details on the actual sources (those not interested can skip to the next paragraph): We get HNO<sub>3<\/sub> from a simple permeation tube setup, which contains solid HNO<sub>3<\/sub> permeating out of the tube at a known rate. Producing N<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>5<\/sub> is slightly more involved. We actually have two different calibration sources that both use the same reaction of NO<sub>2<\/sub> + O<sub>3<\/sub> to generate N<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>5<\/sub>, but in different ratios. O<sub>3<\/sub> is produced from air passed over a UV lamp. The NO<sub>2<\/sub> is ordered from a gas supply company. The N<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>5<\/sub> produced is constant if the reaction conditions are held constant, but the final concentration can be controlled by dilution with air. HONO is produced from the reaction of HCl (from a permeation tube) and NaNO<sub>2<\/sub>. In the lab, this is usually straightforward, but right now our instruments are packed into a tiny airplane and set up to pull in air from outside the plane while flying. This means some of the instruments have their sampling inlets on the \u00a0sides of the airplane, while others have inlets sticking up through the airplane roof.. So, we all spend a lot of time climbing all over the airplane and handing sources up and down so we can sample the different compounds we want to test. We needed to devise a creative method for adding the calibration sources to NOxCaRD because one of its inlets is on the roof and heated to 650\u00b0C (over 1200 \u00b0F!). \u00a0We ended up wrapping the inlet with a layer of insulation and using a hose clam<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_178\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-178\" class=\"wp-image-178 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/air-quality-in-slc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/60\/2017\/01\/Handoff-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/air-quality-in-slc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/60\/2017\/01\/Handoff-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/air-quality-in-slc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/60\/2017\/01\/Handoff-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ciresblogs.colorado.edu\/air-quality-in-slc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/60\/2017\/01\/Handoff-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-178\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carrie hands Dorothy a calibration source to feed into the inlet<\/p><\/div>\n<p>p to hold a piece of rod, acting \u00a0like a ringstand, which you may remember from your high school chemistry lab. We attach a simple clamp to the rod that holds the tip of the \u215b\u201d quartz in our hot inlet. The I- CIMS inlet is on the side of the plane and is unheated, so adding sources is much simpler. When we calibrate both NOxCaRD and I<sup>&#8211;<\/sup> CIMS with the same source (cross-calibrate), we are careful to leave all the tubing the same to make sure we\u2019re adding exactly the same amount to both instruments, \u00a0but we simply put the quartz directly into the CIMS inlet on the side of the plane.<\/p>\n<p>We usually run calibrations on days when we\u2019re not flying.
